Kingdom of the Wicked is a dark and often violent book. The reader is left wondering how they are connected to the rest of the events, before Landy brilliantly incorporates them into the main plot. The structure of this book is also genuis- the prologue depicts Kitana’s gang using their powers on a sorcerer, before they disappear for a large chunk of the book. The stakes are both personal and decidedly lower stake than usual. All he wants is to see sorcerers no longer hide in the shadows and aims to do that with a machine that allows magic users to use their powers freely. Argedion however… Argedion is a borderline protagonist. Most books revolve around world changing events or plots to destroy humanity, with villains who are usually various degrees of evil. So far, sounds like a regular Skulduggery adventure.

Things get more complex however as a vast conspiracy involving a parallel world, a sorcerer named Argedion and the continued plotting of the Man with the Golden Eyes threaten to dismantle the detectives. What’s the plot? Skulduggery and Valkyrie, having neutralised the Necromancers, investigate what seems to be a regular case of rogue magic with sporadic magic events happening across Ireland, all the while a group of magical teenagers, led by a girl called Kitana, use their magic for mischief. In many ways, it’s the precursor to the darker, more mature and character driven books of Phase 2. Any good series will evolved beyond its original premise and Kingdom of the Wicked is that evolution. He understands these characters and this world inside out. By this point, Derek Landy has written six books and countless short stories set in the SP universe. To understand why Kingdom of the Wicked is the best, it’s best to look at it within the context of the series.

Let’s dive into this masterpiece spoilers and all. When I last talked about this book I went spoiler free, but now, the gloves are off. Well, today is the day I explain my reasoning, as the seventh book in the series is still the high point of the saga in my opinion. In 2017 I did a series of posts going through each Phase 1 Skulduggery Pleasant book and describing them all, and in Part Three I promised to go in-depth into my favourite book in the series, Kingdom of the Wicked, and look at why it’s my favourite. Last week saw the release of Skulduggery Pleasant: Bedlam, the twelfth book in the greatest fantasy series of all time.
